Changes to the eXtyles product line

Updated 11.22.24

Wiley Partner Solutions (which acquired Inera in 2019) announced on August 13, 2024, that it will be ending development of and external support for all eXtyles products after a period of two years.

  • Between now and August 13, 2026, the Inera team will provide end user support and maintenance to current customers and will limit training and customization services to essential projects; after August 13, 2026, Inera will cease to provide eXtyles software updates and technical support
  • During and after this two-year period, Wiley will continue to support eXtyles for its own internal use, and will offer eXtyles processing to external customers through its Production Services offering in the Wiley Partner Solutions business unit
  • Sales of new eXtyles implementations will end immediately

Q: What does this announcement mean for current eXtyles customers?

A: The eXtyles commercial product line is being discontinued. Customers who have eXtyles contracts that grant perpetual licenses can continue to use the software for as long as they like, but to do so after August 13, 2026, they will need to maintain IT environments that support a current release of eXtyles. This may require not installing or rolling back future system updates that could interfere with eXtyles functionality (more information is available on our Technical Support page). Realistically, most customers should assume that their eXtyles workflows may not be reliable after the support period ends.

Q: Is eXtyles going away for good in August 2026?

A: No. Though we have made the difficult decision to end support for eXtyles as a licensed solution, we will continue to support the product in a single IT environment – our own, as part of the Publishing Services offering of the Wiley Partner Solutions business unit. This team provides eXtyles processing as an outsourced service and will continue to do so.

Q: What about Edifix?

A: Edifix makes the eXtyles bibliographic reference tools available as a web service, with monthly and annual subscription tiers based on reference volume. While there are likely to be some changes to Edifix in the coming years, Wiley plans to continue to support the product.

Q: Will the technical support Inera provides during the next two years be different than what eXtyles customers are used to?

A: Our mission will be to maintain eXtyles to support existing workflows and to minimize the risk of disruption to those workflows as customers explore other options. To meet this goal, we will be reorienting our service activities to some extent, to focus on stability. Please see our Technical Support page for detailed information on what to expect.

Q: What alternative products and workflows should eXtyles customers be exploring?

A: One of our goals during this phase will be to provide guidance and venues for discussion of alternative workflow solutions. We have created a resource hub and are planning an online event for eXtyles customers to share information with each other and learn about a variety of available options. We will be in regular communication with our customers about these resources and plans over the coming months.

Q: I have more questions!

A: Please feel free to contact Liz Blake, formerly Director of Business Development at Inera and now Director, Production Product Operations at Wiley Partner Solutions. Our primary concern is our customers, and our primary goal is to provide whatever information and assistance we can. The eXtyles transition team includes both Inera staff and Wiley colleagues, and we are all happy to schedule conversations with customers.
