In addition to highlighting third-party solutions that may be of interest to eXtyles customers, the eXtyles Transition Team is providing information about our own offerings, including eXtyles as a Service. eXtyles as a Service (Wiley Publishing Services)
Business Overview and Relevant Offerings
Since 2021, the eXtyles team has been working closely with the Wiley Publishing Services business unit (formerly known as J&J Editorial) on joint projects. While contracting with Wiley Publishing Services means outsourcing some portion of your workflow, the North Carolina–based team is unique in its partnering approach and focus on quality and customer communication. With “eXtyles as a Service,” the staff runs eXtyles on behalf of its clients and works directly with the eXtyles team on discovery, setup, training, and troubleshooting.
While we will be ending external support for eXtyles in August of 2026, we will continue to support its internal use by our Publishing Services team, and we can make your version of eXtyles available to this team to (a) simply run eXtyles on your content and send you the results, or (b) run eXtyles on your content in addition to providing other copyediting and/or production services.
The benefits of this approach for current eXtyles users are:
- Maintaining some workflow continuity
- Ensuring consistent, accurate output that meets your specific editorial and production requirements – your solution has already been customized and vetted
- High-quality editorial automation in addition to XML conversion services
As compared with running eXtyles with in-house staff, this solution will:
- Have longer turnaround times, including if output needs to be reprocessed
- Have volume–based pricing (by the page in Word)
We are happy to discuss this option with all eXtyles customers, and we anticipate that it may be most attractive to customers with somewhat lower publication volumes and less aggressive project schedules; it may also be appealing to customers who use eXtyles for editorial automation only.
Key Features and Functionalities
Since it’s eXtyles, you already know how it works! While this solution means your in-house staff is not managing and running the software yourselves, the output will be the same, and the same eXtyles team who provided your setup and support will be directly supporting the Wiley Publishing Services team.
Customization Capabilities
Many eXtyles customers require additional software customization over time, as editorial and workflow requirements evolve. Such customization would be worked out directly with the eXtyles team, following our current processes (determining project specifications and providing a price quote based on hourly rates or a service pack).
Deployment and Usage
The Wiley Publishing Services team will assign a client manager to work directly with you on project scheduling, file transfer protocols, and communication channels and will liaise with the eXtyles team on deployment and ongoing support.
Pricing Model
While we already have a number of customers using this service, pricing thus far has been ad hoc; our goal is to provide standardized pricing for eXtyles customers, which we plan to finalize in Q1 of 2025. As mentioned, the pricing will be by the page in Word, so if you are interested in this solution, we’ll need to know your anticipated volume; if you’re not sure of your volume in Word pages, a published PDF page count will suffice (we have a formula!).
