The eXtyles Transition Team is highlighting third-party solutions that may be of interest to eXtyles customers as they explore alternative workflows. While our team has not fully vetted and does not endorse any third-party offering, we have communicated with a variety of vendors who provide tools and services that may align with eXtyles customer requirements. Many thanks to our partners at Typefi for providing the information below. Click here to return to the eXtyles Transition Resource Hub overview.
Typefi: Project Orion
The future of JATS/BITS/STS editorial tools from Typefi
Business Overview and Relevant Offerings
Typefi develops an industry-leading, automated XML-first publishing platform that can publish up to 1000 pages per hour using Adobe InDesign Server. The company has been implementing Word to XML solutions since 2004 and has over 20 years of experience developing Microsoft Word plug-ins.
Typefi team members were active participants in the initial development of JATS/BITS/STS standards. Many team members continue to speak regularly at JATS-Con and participate in groups like JATS4R. Additionally, some of Typefi’s longest-running customers—including ISO, IEEE, New England Journal of Medicine, and WHO—are deeply involved with the continued development of these standards.
Typefi has been an Inera partner since 2006, and the two organisations share a large number of joint customers. This gives Typefi deep experience with the requirements and workflows of eXtyles users. Typefi also already has an integration with Edifix, Inera’s online bibliographic reference solution.
Typefi’s own Word-to-XML and XML-to-Word tools have been a key part of its automated publishing solution since the company’s founding in 2001. These tools are actively developed to remain at the cutting edge of current technology.
Typefi ‘s Word-to-XML solution includes:
- Typefi Writer: A Microsoft Word plug-in for styling, applying structure, adding markup, and validating Word documents interactively. Typefi Writer also connects seamlessly to Typefi Server, enabling server-side content validation, automated batch document processing, content enhancement, and XML conversion.
- Typefi Workflows: A server-side workflow engine where actions can be chained together to achieve a specified result. Workflows can be triggered from within Microsoft Word using Typefi Writer, enabling seamless upload of the Word file to the Typefi Server for automated processing. The resulting files can be returned to the desktop computer or routed to another system such as a CMS.
- Typefi Converter: A server-side component used to convert Word documents to XML (or XML to Word) with support for MathML conversion, extraction of images, embedded Excel tables, etc.
- Modify DOCX: A server-side component to natively manipulate DOCX files using a set of rules for automated styling and content enhancement.
- XML Validation: A server-side component that leverages the power of Schematron to perform rules-based XML validation. It can also automatically check hyperlinks to detect outdated or broken links.
- Styling Scripts: Also known as style expansion scripts, these scripts are used to add detailed styling or tagging to content based on context.
- XSLT Processor: This server-side XSLT processor can apply one or many XSL transforms to XML files.
Key Features and Functionalities
Document structuring
Typefi users can already interactively style and structure documents in Word using the Typefi Writer plug-in. This structure can also be applied automatically using Typefi Server. Typefi is working to enhance and extend these existing solutions to support styling of JATS/BITS/STS-specific content such as author and affiliation blocks, citations, and references.
Bibliographic reference support
Typefi will continue to use our existing integration with Edifix to enable bibliographic reference support.
Other editorial automation
Typefi’s tools can already replicate the functionality of the most important XML editorial automation features. Typefi plans to create a configuration package that closely mirrors the editorial automation features in eXtyles. This will allow Typefi to use eXtyles configuration files to replicate customer-by-customer configurations.
XML conversion
Typefi has over 20 years of experience with Word-to-XML conversion. Typefi’s tools are built to support bi-directional XML conversion to and from Word and Adobe InDesign as well as XML conversion to/from 30+ other formats.
Customization Capabilities
Typefi can be configured to meet virtually any customer requirements.
Deployment and Usage
Typefi can be deployed on-premises or as a fully managed SaaS solution. Typefi is used by customers publishing a few hundred pages to tens of millions of pages per year.
Pricing Model
Typefi is sold as a software subscription.
