In addition to highlighting third-party solutions that may be of interest to eXtyles customers, the eXtyles Transition Team is providing information about our own offerings, including our reference processing web service, Edifix. See below for more information about Edifix for eXtyles customers, or click here to return to the eXtyles Transition Resource Hub overview.

Edifix

Business Overview and Relevant Offerings

Edifix makes the eXtyles tools for editing, linking, correcting, and tagging bibliographic references available as a web service. Subscription tiers are based on reference volume and are available for everyone from freelance copy editors to large-scale online editing platforms.

In addition to the features it shares with eXtyles, Edifix currently links to two additional databases for research integrity checks: Retraction Watch and Cabells Predatory Reports. Retraction Watch provides comprehensive coverage and detailed information about citations to retracted content, and Cabells flags citations to works published in journals that do not follow industry best practices or may be fraudulent.

Key Features and Functionalities

With the Edifix UI, references are pasted into a web form, the editorial style is specified (either manually or through default settings), and, as with eXtyles, the results are returned with corrections, links, and warnings.

  • Edifix performs all reference processing in a single step:
    • Copyedits to a preferred style
    • Corrects journal names/abbreviations
    • Checks for duplicate references
    • Links references to PubMed and Crossref and corrects references based on data returned from these resources
    • Flags retracted references with data from Retraction Watch
    • Flags references that cite journals indexed in Cabells Predatory Reports
    • Warns users about errors or discrepancies that cannot be corrected automatically and/or require editorial oversight
    • Exports references to a preferred format
  • Results can simply be copied and pasted back into Word from the web form, but Edifix also supports export of results to .doc, HTML, RIS, BibTeX, Medline, or JATS XML formats
  • With the Edifix API, our bibliographic reference processing, including the granular tagging of references in your XML, can be integrated into a larger automated workflow
  • Unlike eXtyles, Edifix acts on reference lists only; it does not match references to in-text citations or perform any of the other eXtyles in-text citation processes

Customization Capabilities

Edifix supports most standard styles and many custom styles; if your style is not included, it can be integrated (and will then be available to all Edifix users). eXtyles users who have eXtyles configured to fully process references to journals only will need to add support for book references if they want to include their style in Edifix.

A list of the styles currently supported by Edifix is available at https://support.edifix.com/support/solutions/articles/1000080305-what-editorial-styles-are-available-in-edifix-

Deployment and Usage

Edifix is a SaaS (software-as-a-service) solution that offers both UI and API access.
